I am considering the future replacement of the 2.5 TD in my Defender to a 200TDI. Does anyone have recommendations for a reliable source for this type of motor? From searching the forum it seems that there are some warnings about poor suppliers :x but not much mention of the "good guys" :D so any recommendations would be appreciated.
Cheers, Rob

Cant help you there Rob, but remember not to paint all suppliers with what you read on the web.
People always complain when something is not "right", but never (rarely) compliment the same.

If you want to be safe, you need to either rebuild it yourself or have it rebuilt. It really does not matter the reputation of the vendor. Nobody can really know the true condition and life of a used engine that is over 18 years old. Just because it "ran great", does not mean much.
What to watch out for is that you are getting ALL the parts. It gets time consuming and costly when you are missing this or that.
I would also suggest that you get the gearbox that is with the engine. The gearing is better and the boxes are stronger that came with the 200TDI over the ones that came with the TD.
I would also look at bigger supplier pricing as well. For instance Britpart sell recon engines: http://britpart.com/Accessory-Catalogue ... ccRef=3931 and even NEW 300TDIs, http://britpart.com/Accessory.aspx?AccessoryRef=1193 The prices are not that bad.

Jeremy from Rocky Mountain Parabolics occasionally brings in engines. I've not bought an engine from him, but he has been good to deal with other wise.
