Locking mechanism in D2 transfer case

#1 Post by davran » Sat May 25, 2013 3:57 pm

I've read that D2s lost their auto-trans coolers and locking mechanism in the transfer case in late '00. Our previous '01 D2 -- that got written off when Cyndi was hit head on -- didn't have either (it was an 01/01 build). The replacement D2 is an 11/00 build. I confirmed a while ago that it has the trans cooler, but today I decided to see if it still had the transfer case lock, and I was very pleased to find it did. I activated it with a 10mm wrench, and the dash light came on.

I found this link on how to install the mechanism:

No one wants to buy the D2 (happily for me, not as much for the dog), so now to source a lever mechanism.

You can either try & find a wrecked '04, mess about installing the manual linkage from a D1 or just buy the Ashcroft parts from Justin at Lucky8.... http://www.lucky8llc.com/Products.aspx?ProductID=2185

Also, while you have the centre console & auto shifter out, remove the shift interlock solenoid from the shift mechanism. You can get the transmission into neutral then if you ever need to be winched out with a dead vehicle

Thanks for the tip about the shift-interlock solenoid.

Hi Dave

I've been researching the same topic and I found the following link is a good source of information about the steps for installing a D1 CDL shifter into a D2.

Cheers, Rob

Had anyone ever used the CDL lever from Great Basin Rovers?
