Engine Swap

#1 Post by sailourboy » Wed Jun 05, 2013 5:18 pm

Thought this might be of interest to those looking to swap out an engine. Pinched from another LR site.

It says I can "DIY install" a Chevy V8 diesel from a motorhome into my RRC. Wouldn't THAT be fun?

Thanks for posting this, kinda cool to see some of the available options.

That is not very up to date.... AA makes an adapters for the Series transfer case to mount pretty much any North American gearbox and thus engine. This was released 3 years ago.

There is also the Mercedes OM617 conversion kits that Robert Davis sells.

There is also the Isuzu 4bd1 conversions as used in Australian Stage 1s and 110s.

Hmm would love to swap a 5sp behind my Mercedes diesel in my disco.
Wondering if a NV4500 will adapt to the OM617.

I think 4x4Labs makes an adapter for any GM trans for the OM617,then I would need to get the adapter to mate the LR t-case to the NV4500.
Starting to all make sense lol

This is still a problem. The Mark's adapter is expensive and may or may not actually exist if you try and buy one.... a few people have made their own and AA said they were developing one. Hopefully it gets released at the same price point as the Series adapter.

Wonder if I could pull the 500 cubic inch (8.2L) V8 and TH400 transmission from my Cadillac and shoehorn it in there...

i always wondered why more people didnt swap in the 4.3 gm v6... 200hp base base stock and 260+ft/lbs of torque... parts very easily available... basicly chevy 350 with two cylinders chopped off.... 85% parts swap between the two...

That sucks so there really is no adapter for the Disco t-case to a GM manuel trans eh BOO!

If I had to guess, probably cost. I don't think the 4.3 V6 is really any cheaper to buy used than a 350. Why get the V6 when you can have the V8 for the same price? Gas mileage difference is likely negligible in these vehicles. The V8 might even do better.

your right... i did some research and the v8 actually had better mileage on some of the heavier trucks... there is no point if you can fit the 5.7 v8... more hp and torque and the same or better mileage... approx 15 real mpg on the full size trucks... thats better than what i am getting on my 4 litre rover...

I don't doubt for a second that putting a 350 into my Rover would improve the fuel economy. More torque, lower in the rev range.
I'm going to look into the difficulty of a swap like this once my engine starts to pack it in. I've got 300k on it now and it's still running pretty strong so I don't feel inclined to ditch it just yet. A friend of mine is a real Chevy affectionado so if I wanted to source a 350 with a strong transmission (TH350 or 400) I could just ask him. And that's likely the route I would go. All of my cars have V8s and that's the way I like it!
