Diesel smell.

#1 Post by Greg S » Thu Jul 16, 2015 12:22 am

I've heard it said that one good thing about having a diesel engine is that if you smell gasoline, you know it isn't your truck. LOL

Today I smelt raw unburnt diesel. "Has to be some other poor soul ahead of me leaking fuel" says I to myself.

After turning off the highway and being the only vehicle on the road, I could still smell it. "Drat!" says I. (No, I didn't actually.) I got home and looked underneath Olive to find a shower of diesel dripping from the injection pump. Sigh!

Same thing happened about three years ago. The electric fuel shut-off solenoid got hot and melted the top off itself thus spewing fuel all over. A simple fix if you have a spare.

Yes! That's the beast.

My last one cost about ten bucks. The next one I went to buy was $142, there about. (I didn't buy it.)

Maybe it was because it was only $10 that it failed and if I'd paid the $142 it wouldn't have failed. H'm?

Andy, you should know better! I can't get Olive up to 160 kph on the backroads around here because there are no roads long enough with steep enough hills where you can get a good tailwind and no tailwinds blowing hard enough for the last few decades. Last hurricane I can remember around here was Freida in 1962(?).

LOL .. ok, maybe only 140kph ...

I wonder why it is getting so hot? Is it too close to the exhaust or is it missing a heat sheild or?
I've never heard of them melting before.:angryfire:

I don't know why they get hot other than they are energized while you are running. Not close to exhaust or anything else hot so no heat shields. The blue plastic cover melts and then slides off the top, fuel follows. It needs a bit higher quality plastic for the top.

Hi Greg

Sorry about your diesel fuel leak. The repairs never seem to end on these rovers. ( I know I am waiting for a new master brake cylinder)
Whats all this talk about 140 and even 160 km. per hour? The only way I know to get a 2.5 L. diesel over 100 KPH. is to drive it off a cliff.

I don't know what the speed problem is... I've had my series 2 diesel up and over 100KPH.... no, wait, that was while it was on the trailer behind the 130 going down the Malahat, I suppose that doesn't count :( My range Rover does 100KPH all day long... guess that doesn't help either... sorry, I'm not being very supportive here.

I wonder if the solenoid could be replaced by an old-school mechanical pull cable like what I have on my series 2 diesel (yeah, I know it is a different pump... just thinking here). I see that Paddocks has the parts in stock for a few pounds http://www.paddockspares.com/bau4611l-d ... enoid.html

If it helps , the solenoid failed on my old injection pump and I bought one for a Volkswagen TDI , works no problem
