While not impossible, the Cummins 4 bt is a lot of motor for a land rover 5 speed to handle. My brother is swapping one into a '53 Dodge power wagon and its a very big heavy ass engine .... If it were me I would get a hold of a decent 200 or 300 tdi \ 2.8 and basically bolt it in. if you need more power then a pump mod and vvt turbo\ intercooler

I looked into it before I converted my truck to a 300tdi. The adapter plate would have needed to be quite large and the weight and size of the actual engine ruled it out for me. Was not convinced that the transmission would take the extra load either, the transfer case would be fine with it. My two cents!
Thanks,
Pat

Also the 4bt has gotten expensive of late. It will likely cost you more than a 300tdi conversion and not net you that much more power unless you really modify the 4bt. Also, the 4bt is slower revving meaning 1. gearing won't be right, 2. produces a lot more torque at lower rpm meaning you will be stressing the driveline a lot. It's also super loud, vibrates like crazy and weighs about as much as the rest of your rover.

In my opinion the 4bt really isn't going to be a good fit. I've got a 2.5 NAD and spent a fair bit of time thinking about swaps. Eventually I found a 300tdi which is going in in a couple of weeks, but here are some other options.

Mercedes om617a - front sump is tough to clear axle, underpowered without mods, very tough engine
Mercedes om602 - very nice, could use more power,
Mercedes om603/606 - fantastic engine, too long. hard to clear axle

Isuzu 4J series - super nice, a bit big, expensive, a bit rare

2.5td - nope, not known for reliability
defender 200 tdi - drop in fit, getting rare and price going up for an old engine
defender 300 tdi - all good, too bad water pump is so high, need to weld in motor mounts
disco 200 tdi - turbo fouls frame rail, can swap to defender intake and exhaust, but why not just get defender model then
disco 300 tdi - fits no problem, minor differences, need to weld in motor mounts
2.8 international - fantastic, bolt in, big bucks. the way to go if money isn't an issue

GM 6.2 - has been done, bit of a lump, not much more power but a lot more weight, cheap for a used one, expensive to rebuild
GM 6.5 - will break things

VW tdi - not a bad match for hp/torque. wiring is complicated or can get a mechanical pump built. generally would be a bit stressed in a rover, and cost wise not far off a rover engine

4bt - TALL, hard to clear axle, loud, expensive, not much hp and torque will break things.
6bt - too big

ford 7.3 - too big
ford 6.4/6.0 - ha ha ha, no.

Jeep Liberty diesel - probably a good fit, expensive and generally unavailable

Perkins 4236 - would fit, but under powered and turns too slow. Also more tractor like than rover engines.

Volvo marine - TMD40 series - good hp/torque, way too big, probably expensive

Mitsubishi 4d55t/4d56t/4M40 - good little engine, too small for rover, a bit pricey for what it is, available through Hyundai network and some old ford rangers

Toyota 2LT - cracks heads, not really available
Toyota 3L - low availability, decent engine, under powered
Toyota D4-D - great engine, not available in North America, import expensive, electronic
Toyota 3B - leave it in the land cruiser, reliable but slow, if you add a turbo less reliable and still slow.
Toyota 12H-T - great match for rover, a little long and pretty rare
Toyota 1HD-T - super engine, big bucks, long.

Thanks for all the input. I'm thinking not as good an idea as I'd have thought.
