6 day Oregon Loop Trip - Sept 1st to 6th 2015

#1 Post by ANDYD » Fri Feb 27, 2015 12:37 am

Hi All,

We are in the process or organizing a Club trip down to the Sand Dune off-road playgrounds & beaches near Florence, Oregon. Then follow the Oregon coast up to Fort Stevens and then across to Portland International Raceway for the 2015 ABFM.
This trip is open to all Rover-Lander members, lots of details with the itinerary and photos are now in the Members Only section.
Take a look and let us know if you are interested..... its a popular time of the year so numbers maybe limited due to camp sites available.

For more details go over to the Members Only section of the forum.

Cheers,
Andy

That sounds like a GREAT run!
... but is also looks like I've got 7 months of 'begging for permission' ahead of me...

I'm in for sure. Would like to take the old Landy but it will be dependant on how many family members are coming. Can we PayPal the U.S. $$$?

Hi Andy

I would really like to come along on this trip we have done it before and it is incredable. Both the dune and beach driving and the 3 days of British cars and the historic car racing at the Portland race track. Camping is great at the show its a really nice soft grassy shady spot under the trees.

One suggestion if I can make it is to get off the I-5 as soon as you can. That road just about shakes your fillings out, especially in a leaf sprung Rover. I thought my spare tire on the Bonnet was going to fly off it was bouncing so bad. (Also I can only get up to 70mph. even the semis were passing me.)

Im in!!

Good to see some early interest, we have reserved a bunch of camping sites all together, potentially up to 16 vehicles.

Yes, Victor the I5 highway can be a little grueling, we have the option of heading west over to the 101 at Olympia (once we get past Seattle) and heading down the coastal road. This is definately more comfortable but will add a couple of hours to the journey.

I will update the trip information in the Rover-Landers Members section .....

Cheers, Andy

The dunes sounds like a terrific way to end the summer. We're a tentative yes (subject to family sign off) etc.

Darn. We will already be away. Couldn't do it the week after the NW Overland Rally, when we are already down there?

Just kidding. Have fun!

Hi Mark,

The beach driving and the Sand Dunes are both "near" saltwater... but there is no need to drive into any salt water.
I doubt the sand has any more salt in it than the BC roads in the winter

Thanks Andrew,

Also registered. I'm assuming camping for the afbm is included in the $40 registration fee?

Thanks for the heads up Andrew.

Yes, all those who have signed up and paid up (see list on the Members only section) will need to go online and registerer their vehicle for the ABFM.

Matt, correct the $40 entrance fee includes the camping, the ABFM meet, the Swap meet and the Race Track.
Also, If you send a photo of your truck into them when you register, your truck picture will be put in the 2015 ABFM Program/booklet which you will recieve a copy of when you enter the grounds.

Cheers,
Andy

Wow! What a fantastic trip. :alien: :alien: :alien:
Big thanks to all my fellow campers who made it so much fun. :D
Extra big thanks to Andy for organizing it all. I think organizing Roverlanders is rather like herding cats, but it's much appreciated.
Now, to sort the photos...

Hey Guys,

Now all safely back from our adventurous week down in Oregon.
Eleven Land Rovers loaded with 20 keen participants invaded the Sand Dunes near Florence, rumbled down the beaches of the Oregon Coast, explored the old military gun batteries in Fort Stevens and proudly lined up at the All British Field Meet at the Portland International Raceway.

Just over 1800 km's in total, no major mechanical issues, more sun and blue skies than rain, winches and tug straps were exercised on the dunes, many awards were swooped up by the BC boys at the Portland ABFM. Great week, awesome group, lots of great memories .....

Here are a few photos, many more will be put up in the Gallery over the next week ..... (please send your photos to Bill)

cheers, Andy

Andy,

Thanks again for organizing a wonderful event. It was fantastic getting to know everyone. I had my hands full with the kids and did not take too many pics. Here are the only 3 videos which I took:
