Cabin Lake - Sept Club Run Sept 19-20

#1 Post by ANDYD » Tue Sep 15, 2015 12:17 am

Hi All,

I haven't even had chance to wash the Oregon sand off my Land Rover and its already time for the next club run
We have decided to change the destination from earlier plans to make it a shorter trip on the weekend. The plan is to head out to the beautiful sub-alpine Cabin Lake which is nestled under Stoyoma mountain roughly mid-way between highway #1 and highway #5. Hopefully making a loop of it, heading up the #5, across to Cabin Lake and back down highway #1, camping at Cabin Lake overnight.

What- 2 day off-road trip - overnight camping.
Where - To Cabin Lake (approx. 70kms north of Hope)
When - Sat 19th and Sun 20th September. Meeting at 9am at Whatcom Road Tim Horton's (just off Highway #1).
Why - Why not? Summer is fast coming to an end.... make the most of it before its all over...
What Else - We haven't been up this way for a number of years so its hard to predict the road conditions. We are not expecting anything that a stock Land Rover cant handle but as always, possible BC pin striping if some road are over-grown.
This is wilderness camping, there should be an outhouse and picnic tables at the Lake but come prepared for the wilderness and expect it to get cold at night. Last fuel is in Hope, although if you fill up at Whatcom Road on Sat am, that should be plenty of fuel for the whole loop. Planning to be back in Vancouver around 5pm (ish) on Sunday.

OK, who's up for the adventure? Let us know if you are coming?

cheers, Andy

I will be there with the mighty O'Doul and a chainsaw . Recent wind storms may have caused some issues with the roads.

Sorry I won't be able to make it.
My wife took my truck and my dog back to Florida - I really miss my truck!
Might have it back by November though so I'll be on the look out for the next trip.

Post Trip Report ....

There are two ways into Cabin Lake from Boston Bar, the "easy way" and the "hard way" and as we only had a small group of Land Rovers, of course we opted for the hard way! The hard way turned out to be a road that switched between goat trail, rocky creek and quad trail. Nature has a way of reclaiming her territory and she was well underway with reclaiming this road!
We finally emerged a little battered and bruised but happy that we were able to push all the way through.
We made it up to the stunning Cabin Lake a couple of hours before dark and quickly set up camp on the tip of the peninsula that protrudes into the lake. Soon we were relaxed by a nice big camp fire, enjoying a cold beverage as we recapped the days adventure.
Just as we headed for bed we noticed the weather was-a-changing! By midnight we had heavy, sideways rain and wind gusts that would be hard to stand up in! Still, we were all tucked up safely in our tents, so just had to get to sleep and ride it out. It was quite tough to sleep whilst listening to our campsite was being tossed around outside, lots of crashing and banging going on. We all survived the crazy night and by morning things were looking brighter. After breakfast we packed up and departed Cabin Lake, we then dropped into Lightning Lake and Silver Lake before trying out a little short-cut named the "Mini-Whipsaw" which we were happy to be sliding down it and not trying to climb up it! By early afternoon we skirted the picturesque Murray Lakes and emerged on the Coquihalla and headed for home. Cabin Lake was one of our favourite lakes we had visited and we vowed to return again soon.....

Cheers, Andy

You are brave men!!!! The area around cabin lake is also one of my favorites. Of interest is that the "Cabin" was built and used by the sheep herders from Clapperton Ranch which is now owned by Alan Simpson (Land Rover restorer extraordinaire) and he still has grazing right to that whole huge area.

I presume you didn't get a chance to get up to the water bomber plane crash site, perhaps next time.

I'd love to do some serious exploring in the area but it's a short season, hopefully soon though!!

certainly appeared to be a great 4-wheeling run and secluded location for camping and exploration . sure do love the photos .
I must do this trip when it appears on the calendar next .
