Borg warner T-Box in a D2

#1 Post by Tony4921 » Sat Nov 21, 2015 8:22 pm

I have a 2002 D2, all stock, but the clown I bought it off disconnected the SLABS. he probably did this due to the 3 amigos. so I have now discovered that the T/C is inop and as I have no CDL I may spin one wheel and get stuck. I don't mind the ABS being out but dont like no CDL with no T/C. I have just bought my first RR Classic to part out and came up with the idea of using the Borg Warner T-box with a viscous coupling CDL. Anyone done this or know of any issues I face? Eventually its getting an air locker in the rear, as I do a bit of off road, and kind of like the idea of an auto CDL. I had one in a Subaru and it was great. I believe that they both use a silicone technology viscous coupling.

Are you sure your box does not have the diff lock? Lots have it but the shifter was left out. Even if it doesn't, it is simple to grab a front output housing from a D1 and put it on.

You can also get a Torsen style centre diff.

2002 D2 doesn't have the CDL in the Front Output Housing.

You could get a front Housing from a D1 or from a D2, 1999 - 2001. (These have the lever on them, but no shifter for it.)

2003 - 2004 has the lever & shifter.

In my 1999 D2, I used a D1 T/C Shift lever, but had to modify the T/C Shifter opening in the Floor Cover. Also had to bend the CDL Shift Rod.
I also had to mount the floor plate on top of the tunnel & not under the floor due to height of T/C Shifter.

I also removed the Interlock Solenoid while I was in there.

There are a few different after market CDL Shift kits, but the prices are high.

As to a BW out of a RRC, it will go in but:

You'll need the Transmission Output Shaft out of the RRC ZF Trans & Drives Shafts (not sure if they will need modified)

I had a RRC that I was going to convert to a LT230 but liked the BW in it so much I left it.

A 2003 Disco does not have the CDL nipple or the lever. I had to install the CDL option on my 2003 Disco with a 2004 front output module and 2004 CDL shift lever.

LR finally wised up and offered it on the 2004 Disco.

I just kind of like the simplicity of the viscous CDL. Im not going hardcore wheeling in the D2. Took the donor Classic out this morning, what a tank, very capable, very little wheel spin in the mud on big slopes. Think I am going the B/W route.

The problem with the B/W is they have a very high failure rate.

The BW T-box is a real piece of crap and very expensive to repair, but if you have a working one on hand..... Most VC units don't last longer than 200k so check the millage on the one you have. You will have to keep the Classic front out put flange on the BW T-box and use the drive shaft from the classic as well since they are a little longer. Did the exact opposite when I changed to a LT230.
