Making a 2.25 diesel

#1 Post by Peleus21 » Tue Jan 05, 2016 10:22 pm

I am going to ask what may seem to be a stupid question. Can a 2.25 gas be converted into a diesel for cheap? Just curious for one of my bush buggies I have a spare 2.25 for rebuilding. The shop manual doesn't really show much of a difference. Motor is out of a 1960. I would assume it needs higher compression pistons for starters...

Petrol to Diesel? LOL
A Duncan family recently finished converting a diesel to a petrol.

If you search the "projects" section, I'm sure you can find the thread. I don't see why you couldn't go the other way. Maybe even get hold of them for the cast off parts.
Yes, you definitely need special pistons and con rods for the diesel. The head will need changing too I expect.

Why? The petrol has about triple the power.

Probably cheaper to find a 2.5 NAD.

But, if you really want to, I think the only things that would stay the same are the following:

Block
Crank
Camshaft
oil pump
Flywheel housing
Flywheel

Pretty sure everything else would be different.

If you had a 2.25 diesel that ran fine and then cracked the block (which I've never heard of happening) then you could swap everything onto a 2.25 gas block for giggles.

The reason for diesel is for my fathers acreage. He has a diesel tank for refuelling the backhoe and such and was interested in one of the rovers if I can rig up a diesel for it. I am looking into a 2.5 diesel to buy. I was just curious on the idea of it.
