Copper Creek to Hedley Off-Road Adventure - 16th-17th July
Copper Creek to Hedley Off-Road Adventure - 16th-17th July 2016
What - Two day off-road run, overnight wilderness camp out
When - Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th July 2016
Where - Meeting location - Highway #3 and Placer FSR turn off at 49.1121.00N / 120.3341.50W (allow 3 hrs from Vancouver).
Saturday - Departing the Fraser Valley on highway #1 heading for Hope. Once near Hope, take highway #3 and head towards Manning Park. After exiting Manning park look out for the Gas Station (last chance for fuel) at Eastgate.
Approx 9km past the gas station on a tight bend, turn off (right) at Placer Forest Service Road. We will meet at this turn off at 10am Saturday. (option for camping at Copper Creek on Friday night for those who want to come up early and start off fresh). We will traverse Placer mountain with lunch atop the 6000ft peak, climb the red Ashnola switch backs and camp out on the Ashnola River in Cathedral Park.
Sunday - depart the campsite after breakfast around 10am, follow the Ashnola river down to Hedley, explore the old mines, have lunch on the mountain side. Back on the highway#3 near Hedley at 2pm (ish). Back at Abbotsford by 5pm (ish).
This is a two day, one night trip. (with the option of 2nd night on Friday) Wilderness camping, bring everything you need with you. The road conditions will be mainly small FSR with a few narrow and challenging sections, nothing that a stock Land Rover can not handle. As usual, there could be possible BC pinstriping from overgrown sections.
Post up and let us know if you are coming so we don't leave without you. Email me if you are coming up on Friday and don't know where the campsite is...
Cheers,
Andy

Hi Andy,
I would love to join the group. However, I had previously committed to participating in a charity soccer event on the Saturday to help raise funds for a family in need in Chilliwack. I will not be able to leave Chilliwack before 3 pm on the Saturday.
I can try and hook up with the group on Saturday evening. I have a mobile ham radio. Would you have specific GPS coordinates of the Sat night campsite?

Stuart,
I will be heading up on Friday, email me with what times you have in mind. Chris said he may be looking at a Friday departure also.
Is Dave V coming out? He will likely want to leave Wednesday morning to meet us on Friday ....
Andrew,
Its probably not a good idea heading up that late, its like a maze of logging roads up there and you don't want to be still looking for us after dark!
We have a few sites in mind for a campsite on Saturday night, but where we end up depends on the size of the group and if anyone else is already there when we arrive.

I have solved my ignition problem and will be going Friday to camp over a Copper Creek Friday night. Might have son Ben with me (Still negotiating with wifey on that!). See ya there; I hope to be on the road to allow a camp set up in the afternoon of Friday.

Post Run Report;
Excellent turn out, lots & lots of Land Rovers turned out even though the weather forecast threatened a mix bag of unknowness!
16 vehicles lined up at Copper Creek and set off heading towards Placer Mountain. The hills were moist and green and no sign of dust at all. After a entertaining trip through the rolling hills we climbed atop the 7000ft Placer peak. Unfortunately we were in a thick cloud so not much of a view point! Onwards down the "red road" switch backs to our camp site on the Ashnola river. Glorious sunshine greeted us on Sunday morning for a exploration of the Hedley mine site.
Great to see so many eager explorers, awesome group, thanks for coming out....
A couple of photos below... more to come soon in the Gallery. If you have some photos to share, please send the in :D
Cheers, Andy

Big thanks to Andy and Dave and Pamela for organizing and guiding this past weekend. Without their efforts, we wouldn't have such nice runs and interesting places to visit. I had never been to the mine, well worth the trip.
