slow leaking tyres......

#1 Post by ANDYD » Tue Dec 13, 2005 9:06 pm

I was not pleased to notice 3 of 4 BFG MT tyres on my RRC slowly losing air! :?

It was very puzzling, couldn't find any rips, no nails, valve stems seemed fine :?:

So down to the tyre shop I went......they pulled off a tyre.....and there it was.....the culprit.......about half a pound of fine sand from the RTV trials we did a little while back! They told me it was quite common after lowering the PSI in your tyres in deep sand or sandy water that fine sand will get between the rim & the tyre seal, just enough to let a little air out each day!

Now the air is staying in the tyres & I'm happy again :D

cheers,
Andy

Yea that’s kind of interesting Andy & not unheard of. That’s one of the reasons I’m not a big fan off airing down (as show on the Secret Lk run, however I did eventually lower the pressure :) ). Don’t get me wrong, lowering defiantly helps traction.

I just had a bead/rim leak fixed on my on-road BFG AT’s probably because I hadn’t kept the pressure up while they had been in storage for about 10 months.

Well, glad to hear I'm not the only one. I came back from a road trip of 6 days after the Trials and my two front tires were totally flat. Took them for repair only to find that it was fine mud between tire and rim.
I came out this morning to find one more tire flat, and the same thing again!

While dirt between tire and rim is nothing new, its pretty weird to have 6 tires have the same problem as a result of playing at the same event. Maybe it was radioactive mud, like Dave T used to call it!
