Fairey Overdrive Noise

#1 Post by terayon » Sun Oct 14, 2018 11:10 am

Gents,

I've picked up an O/D on the cheap for my '63 4pot. The fellow who sold it to me waskind enough to make this vid of it running before he sold it. As you can hear there is a whining noise...

Thoughts on what the culprit is?

Thanks in advance!

Jordan

Most likely it’s worn bearings. The mesh between the transfer gear and overdrive will also cause the “whine”. Here’s a great manual on tear down and inspection on these units:

Mine makes the same noise. I just figured they were like that.

If you check out the other vid, you can see they are much quieter... though not as quiet as a chain driven system.

My Fairey O.D. is quiet, not a quiet as my fancy roamerdrive but defiantly doesn’t whine. Some of the noise can be the O.D. main gear bedding in with the transfer case. After a few hundred miles it should settle down.
