Bleeding Cav pump

Hoping someone can help out , tried to start the 2.5 today but cannot seem to get more than a dribble of fuel out the IP lines . Filter is bled and I've undone the little bleeder screw on the top of the pump until fuel came out . Is there more than one bleeder on the IP pump ? What have I missed here . Thanks Troy

Hi Troy,

Yes these pumps can be a joy to bleed :evil: :bounce: .
First make sure the solenoid is working and on to the injection pump
You should have the injection pump at full throttle when priming
There should be another little bleed screw somewhere on the pump, remember you want to turn the long part of the screw not the bottom, open them both and when air stops coming out of one close it and do the same to the other one, once air stops coming out.

Now crack injectors 1 and 3 or 2 and 4 , and crank the engine over at full throttle (do not crank the engine more than 10 or 15 seconds at a time ) If the engine starts or tries to start, stop and tighten all the injectors. If only one of the loosened injectors is wet with fuel just tighten it and crank again,the other one should get wet .

If you are still not getting fuel to the injectors after 2 or 3 tries, bleed the whole system again. The CAV fuel system can be very frustrating to bleed, even when you get fuel to the injectors, sometimes have to go back to the fuel pump and re bleed the air out of it.

Thanks Oliver , the stop solenoid works , I can't seem to find the other bleeder on the pump , there is one on the top but that's all I can see , where would the other one be located ?. I was getting a little fuel at number 1 injector , but just a little bit . The pump has sat for 2 years so iam hoping nothing is jammed up inside from sitting. Going to try it again this Saturday hopefully it starts , don't want to have to get the pump rebuilt .

One of the problems is the fuel routing they use with those engine. The return line goes to the fuel filter and this traps air in a loop. Getting rid of that can help a lot. Also watch out for the non return valve on the return line into the filter. If it has any resistance, then the air won't want to bleed out.

I actually ran both returns to tank , also installed an electric pump and filter before the lift pump also . Still wasn't easy getting it running .

Did you use the injector trick or just rebleed the whole system again.

Red90, Thanks for the for the tip on the return line, I'll have to check my tractors and see where they have routed them

After a bit I got tired of the b.s. pulled the air filter hose off filled up a squirt bottle full of diesel turned the motor over and let it have it , fired a few times then it started .
