Diesel Engine

#1 Post by cbalme » Thu May 14, 2020 12:57 pm

I am getting tired of breathing in gas fumes when driving my 109 so I'd like to switch it to a diesel. It also turns out my engine is tired. Rather than rebuild my gas engine I'd like to swap a diesel in and reap the benefits of better fuel consumption and reliability.

Does anyone have a 2.25D, 2.5 N/A, 19j, 200tdi, or 300tdi lying around in running condition or that needs a rebuild?

Thanks

Hey Colin,

It's not a Rover, but would make for an interesting conversion:

Don't do it... don't go to the dark side... oiler engines are a cruel mistress.... okay, well maybe it is not such a bad idea... but think about it first...

2.25D - you will still be smelling fumes... of EVERY other vehicle on the road as they pass you! If you think the 109 is slow with a worn out 2.25 gas then you will be amazed just how similarly slow it will be either a 2.25D (or a 2.5D for that matter). I had a SWB with a 2.25 and it was screaming to get to 50MPH. Torque up the wazoo off road and OK around town but pathetic (almost to the point of being a hazard to others) on the hardtop. A 19J is basically a nightmare waiting to happen and I know you have lived through a 19J experience so you know they can be like. I had a super low mileage 19J in my 130 and it was kinda like a SWB with a 2.5D.... Torque up the wazoo off road and OK around town but pathetic (almost to the point of being a hazard to others) on the hardtop... I installed a roverdrive to split gears to help on the hills but it was hard-pressed to maintain highway speeds on any sort of an incline.

We all know that 200 and 300 TDIs can be great swaps but is your drivetrain up to it? Those engines can eat LT77s and are tough on the earlier series transmissions as well so you're looking at an R380 swap to get the most out of the motor which then impacts your series transfer case, mounts, shifters, the floor and transmission tunnel, seat-box. Your rear axle shafts aren't up to the task so either you need hardened shafts or better yet a Salisbury which then means more modifications. Then, once that's done your brakes really aren't going to be adequate for the added speeds that you can achieve with the new horsepower so time to add a disc brake kit. It's all very do-able and other have done it but your 109 is a pretty sweet truck as it sits right now, you've done such a great job on it so do you really want to start chopping it up again? The 2.25 in good shape should net you close to 75HP, enough power to get you going without enough to start breaking stuff. My 2.25 gas SWB with the Ashcroft TX case cruises the highway nicely and generally keeps up with traffic. I was actually passing some folks on the Malahat (yeah, big trucks, but still passing them so that counts). My recommendation is find a healthy 2.25 and enjoy your 109 for what it is... a really awesome old truck... maybe a little slow and under-powered but definitively a 10/10 on the cool factor!
