Congrats on getting your rover going.
There should be a spring on the shaft below the yellow knob that acts as a return for the 4wd selector. Is it missing? That might be the cause of the problem.

Yellow knob.....
If I remember right,(from my Series days) normal 2 wheel drive the yellow knob is up.
When you require 4 wheel drive the yellow knob is pushed down (push down against the spring until it locks down & engages) You are now in 4wd. Then when you want out of 4wd you dont pull up on the yellow knob, what you do is move the Hi-lo lever fwd & back, this will release the yellow knob & pop it back up........now you are back in 2wd.
Do that make sense?
