Defender 300Tdi snorkel
Hi, all,
I am looking for advice on procuring and fitting a raised air intake on my LHS 1991 110 CSW. It has a retro-fitted 300Tdi. It still has the original heater and A/C box on the RHS immediately forward of the bulkhead. Please send me your suggestions and experience regarding sourcing a full system, or components, or a full DIY system. My primary aim is to achieve a high level air intake to reduce dust ingestion. I do not anticipate serious wading, although I will strive to make any system watertight. I am also hoping to avoid ordering a system from UK, primarily because of the shipping and customs costs.
Many thanks, in advance, for all and any thoughts.
Mike

Many apologies for multiple postings, but I kept getting the message that loading had failed, so checked the forum, and it wasn't there, so tried again! I'll try just once with this apology.

Hey Mike,
Yes the forum postings are lagging for some reason, No worries, I have deleted your duplicate posts.
With your snorkel, the first thing to decide is which side you want to take it out. I believe most 300 tdi's go out the the right side, this makes the most sense as there is more room under the hood and doesn't restrict the vision of the driver (presuming that its left hand drive vehicle). On saying that I have seen them installed on both sides.
So basically, pick your route first before cutting any holes in the fenders
Other options are metal or plastic, some of the newer plastic ones are shaped for aero-dynamic reasons (which is funny considering the "brick" shape Defender).
The routing typically includes a dip (low spot) before entering the air filter. Make sure all your joints are water tight (I found out mine wasn't once  ) That mistake cost me a bent piston conrod  )
Jeremey at Rocky Mountain Parts usually has the snorkel parts in stock (or can get them in a couple of days).
Good luck, share some photos when you do your installation

I have a new, complete raised are intake from Bearmach for sale. Part number BA231AM. It fits defenders with the 300tdi or td5 engines. Asking $200

Thanks for your replies,, both. Yes, I want to mountt the snorkel on the RHS. Matt, have you got the Bearmach number correct? I've been looking at the BM site to look at the details, but that number is not recognised. Perhaps yours is no longer current. If so, perhaps you could post a couple of photos, please. I am definitely interested.
