Hi all,
Any Rover V8 gurus out there?
I built up a “good” GEMS 4.0 v8 for auto tranny, with parts from two motors, a ‘96 and a ‘97. The older block was good, but nothing else was. The newer block had a slipped liner. Almost new cam, new cam bearings, lifters, timing gear, etc. I had the old block cleaned, honed and pressure tested. It all went together fairly smoothly.
However, now when I try to start it, i get the occasional burp, but nothing else. Even starter fluid doesn’t help start it. I have lots of spark and fuel pressure. I’m 99.9% sure I timed the cam correctly, and I don’t think you can install the flywheel in the wrong position (can you?).
I likely did mix the 96 & 97 cam and crank sensors, but they should be the same for both years, no? You can’t change the timing as the GEMS ecu controls that. And the ecu doesn’t show any codes.
Anyhow, before I start tearing things apart, any and all suggestions would be appreciated.
M.

Maybe one of the sensors from the old or new motor are dead?
Pinched/broken wire to a sensor?
Are all plugs connected?
How about the inertia switch?
This where I would start, test the sensors you have to see if they are good.

Plugs, wires, coils and inertial switch are all good. I am getting spark when I crank it.
Re cam and crank sensors - I have no idea how I would test them. I'll check the leads for continuity next and try swapping sensors (if I can remember where I put the others for safe keeping ...... :o )
Oh, and I just came in from the garage. There is a small puddle of coolant on the floor. Its leaking from one of the new frost plugs. Sigh... The one located under the drivers side engine mount (of course).
I'd say its time for a beer, but its too cold and damp for beer. Maybe a shot of something stronger.... More sighs.

Oh too bad. I’m definitely no Rover V8 expert, but if starting fluid doesn’t make a difference I’d be wondering if it was sparking at the right time.

did you check your coil pack?
