The R 380 transmission from my Defender is in pieces on the bench. Cost for just the parts to rebuild is over $4000 (main shaft, synchros, couple gears, bearings, gaskets, etc....) so, to me it makes sense to look at buying a good rebuilt unit. I don't think there is anyone local that just happens to have one on the shelf...so I am thinking about getting one from Ashcroft
www.ashcroft-transmissions.co.uk They seem to have everything covered with the issues that the R 380 has had over the years, and the cost for the unit is reasonable compared to rebuilding here.
Has anyone dealt with them here before? I know over the years some of the local guys have brought in parts from the UK, so I was how difficult/expensive is it to bring somthing like that over? Anyone have any insite in how I may be able to go about getting back on the road?

Ashcroft transmissions
Dave was GREAT to deal with! I can't believe how much money I saved by doing a little research and buying from them.
On Tuesday, my 'bundle of joy' arrived. A brand new R 380 with bell housing, complete clutch kit, updated LT 230 input gear, bearings, gaskets, new linkage, slave cylinder, and clutch master cylinder.
With air shipping from the UK included, exchange, and all taxes, I am well under $3000. To buy just the transmission here, it was just over $5000, then add all the additional parts, probably over $6000 plus tax.
I highly recommend Ashcroft, they were fantastic to deal with, very helpful and efficient!
