GPS - Recommendations...

#1 Post by StuartL » Thu Aug 03, 2006 7:12 pm

I am ready to buy another GPS -- The Sony one I tried was nice but I still have my Beta VCR....I returned it.

I am posed to buy a Garmin 2720. I am trying to get a unit that I can use normally in my Rover, topo and on the boat...big bill but I have met boats in the Gulf Islands navigating with a Chevron roadmap.

Any comments ladies and gentlemen before I take the plunge....Costco once again has the lowest price at $849.

Thanks

Hi Stuart

I am quite happy with my Garmin GPS 5 coupled with my lap top. The 5 is an older Garmin but its shape fits on a rover dash well. If you run a program like Ausi Explorer, then you can use any map with your GPS and lap tops are usefull for other stuff as well.

Have fun as there are lots out there. Deken Equipment usually caries a large selection of GPS receivers, cables, and mounts.

I am running the Garmin 18 (USB) with my RAM mounted laptop using Ozi Explorer sofware and digital BC backroad mapbooks. I have thought Fugawi Software may be better, which has full topos but haven't had time to research it.

I got everything from www.gpscentral.ca, including great service.

Later,
Don
