Wiring Harness for (REAL) Dummies

#1 Post by Canadman » Tue Sep 02, 2025 3:58 pm

So, I've been slowly but surely putting together my Series 2a. It's a bit of a hodgepodge of early 2a and later 2a, which has made things somewhat more complicated. I am NOT a mechanic but took this project on a few years ago and, as health matters stopped me from proceeding for a couple of years, this year I got back to it in earnest. Built from the chassis up, I've managed (with the help of my 2nd year certified apprentice son) to cobble the vehicle mostly together. Save for a few final steps mostly involving the engine, I'm getting close to having this thing ready to start. Drivetrain is rebuilt and complete, brakes, clutch and accelerator pedals are in. Steering column is in. It's starting to look like a vehicle and I was getting fairly enthused and excited.

Then I bought a new wiring harness from Rovers North.

I am the FARTHEST thing from electrical savvy. To say I know little to nothing about electrical is an insult to people who know little to nothing about electrical. After several days of crying and wishing I'd never taken this thing on in the first place, I've resigned myself to the fact that I have no choice but to try to figure out some way to wire this thing. The harness I have is completely Greek to me and though I've attempted to read wiring diagrams, match colours and try to figure out how all these branches of wires, bullet and spade connectors, etc. all attach to the vehicle and make it go vroom, I am literally lost. I've managed to figure out which end of the main harness pushes through the dashboard as that's fairly obvious given the two branches at the one end are filled with wires and both have rubber grommets dangling from them. And while I think I've figured out at least some of those wires and which gauges they go to, beyond the bulkhead everything else looks like a maze of coloured wires, connectors and, well, whatever else is attached to them.

Is there anybody who can at least help advance me further than where I am now. I'd GLADLY pay someone anywhere near the Okanagan to come and provide some guidance in person too.

I'm not beyond begging... or changing my name and leaving the country in the middle of the night, which is my next option.

I suggest you join the landrover series 2 club.
The forum is free, they have some excellent color wiring diagrams and the club is full of helpful folks who all own.....series 2 land rovers.

If you were in the lower mainland I'd help you, as I installed a harness into a 2a last year.
FYI - Virtually every harness I've seen will need some mods as LR made little changes over the years of 2A production. And, US and Canada models also had some unique wiring mods.
All depends on early vs late 2A, what heater is installed, what wiper motors, etc.
I do have a friend in Kelowna who might be able to assist you, but he isn't a member of the club. Send me an email and I'll pass on his contact info.
