... I would have to look long and hard around here to find a tree big enough
to lift my LR! An older friend of mine had a ToyLC years ago and did the
same thing, but intentionally. They were in the oilfield somewhere and VERY
stuck. His truck had a PTO winch that they used to literally lift the truck
right out of the muck. Back in those days I am sure it was more common to
be drinking on the job, which probably contributed to the extra 8 feet of
lift they used beyond the time when the goo had no more hold on the vehicle.

NB- the above is a paraphrased snippit of a tale told to me personally by a
close friend that actually did this. While not at all smart, I have no
doubt about the voracity of the statement.

There are a number of British programs on the Knowledge network that
always feature a Land Rover or two in every episode. Heartbeat on
Saturday night repeated on Sunday night. Then Rosmary and Tyme later
on both nights. That one has a S111 that looks a bit similar to Rob's
of Ladysmith. Rob's is in better shape. You'll see the odd disco and
defender on Frost also on Sat night. There was a program on Showcase
about British Army Provost and you would see all sorts of MOD D90's
and 110's. That's my two bits worth. Hope to see you on the Copper
Canyon run.
Cheers
Derek

Just a reminder to all that we have our Copper Canyon Trail ride this
weekend for those of you that can make it. Victor has been doing some
scouting around and has come up with what sounds to be an enjoyable
route.
Everyone will meet at the Shell station on the Island highway in
Chemainus at 1000 hrs sharp. Be there or be square. Unfortunately I'll
be the square one as I got tagged with being my units duty officer for
this week that includes the weekend. So I can not leave Victoria. This
was going to be my last run of the year before I pulled Gertie apart.
Oh Well!!!! such is life. Hope you all have a grand time.
Cheers

want to get back to Cobble Hill to to take a look at it myself.

p.s from a few cursory longfull looks at the beast when it was my

looked like they just had some superficial rust on them, but it was
only a quick look.

You are in for an interesting, enjoyable, and sometimes frustrating
couple of years. These are backyard-mechanic friendly trucks that can
be restored and maintained with a minimum of money and skills.
The big question about your new truck is, as usual, is "how's the chassis"?
My question is, "what's wrong with the grearbox"?

    Rob;
Thanks for the tip, think I'll give it another go tomorrow
night, got to get the bugger off, and it doesn't look like the two
spare holes on the drum are threaded for a puller bolt or anything,
so a good bashing and heating and bashing and... you get the picture,
I'm sure. Sounds like just what the doctor ordered. I've tried
getting some wrenches in there, but the nuts are on QUITE tight, and
don't seem to be co-operating at all. Too much slippage. Thanks
again, Rob.

After joining this group a while back now, even though at the time of
joining i did not have a Land Rover....I thought one day hopefully i
would. I enjoyed all the postings and photos of the meets, Well my
dream came true, i received a phone call from my wife.
"I have some good news, she said" My neighbour had given me his 1969
11A short wheel base land Rover. I had mentioned to him over a year
ago
that my brother in England had one and had stripped it down to the
frame and rebuilt it. I told him that i would love to get one one day
but having a new born kind of takes care of spare cash. I will be
back
in Cobble Hill In December so if anyone can spare a bit of time to
steer me in the right direction as to getting it up and running i
would
be very appreciative, i know for a fact that it needs a new gearbox
and
that is it, as far as i know. I do plan on making it look fairly nice
in the future, with the assistance of my two year old son..hey, you
have to start early!
Cheers, Pete.

Hi Kerry
For the brakedrum I think it is an issue of getting a bigger hammer
as it has probably rusted itself in place... I've been able to
remove the rear shaft without removing the drum using a thin open-
end wrench.
Heating shouldn't pose too much of a problem as the oil seal is at
the back of the tranny while the p-brake attached to the protuding
spindle so unless you go big on the heat it shouldn't cook the seal.
Like I said... big hammer... might not work but it'll make you feel
better!  ;)

Hey JD thanks for the links, great sites!
Hey Derek, I knew I'd get a reply from you!!
I'll reply to both your emails here, I'm located in Nanaimo, the HUP is
sitting out in the bush in the Nanaimo Lakes area. My friend/co-worker
used to work at the logging camp at first lake from about 1965 to 85.
It was used as a rigging/line truck back when they still used wooden
spar trees, my friend actually worked on it and knew it had been parked
there since about 66 so he took me out for a look at it. We talked to a
guy who works for Timber West and he said we can have it. Trees have
grown all around it and he said it's okay to cut them down so we can
drag it out the road. It has had the front doors, rear axles, engine
cover, steering wheel & shaft robbed off of it. It's in pretty tough
shape but has not been vandalized. I would certainly need a parts
vehicle to restore it properly. I've posted a few pictures of it on this
groups Yahoo site. We're going out this Sunday to extract it from it's
hiding place, it's so grown over that you don't even see it till your
right there. After we get it out in the light and power wash it off it
will be easier to asses it. I'll take more pictures then and post them
too.
Derek, I'd definitely be interested in looking at the other ones that
you mentioned. What sort of mechanical work do you need done? We should
get together one weekend.

Hey JD, the recovery went pretty well, it took about 3.5hrs to get it to
the logging road, about 150 feet. We had to cut down trees, fallen logs
etc. Then eased it down a grade, and zig zagged it out the rest of the
way. A lot of block and rigging work, the Gipsy sure earned it's keep.
The C8's in pretty rough shape for sure, but considering it's been
parked there for 40 years I can't believe how well it has stood up. If I
could find spare parts, I'd love to restore it.
(I'll upload the recovery pictures to the Group site)

Is there approximate timings for this thing: start time - end time.
Â
We were hoping perhaps to get to Victoria for dinner.
Â
On a non-rover note, There are alot of crown assets ILTIS's for auction all over Canada...We may begin to see a few more of these on the roads. And I know first hand how off-road capable these rust buckets with pee holes are! I wish I had a few grand burning in my pocket. Buy two, one for spare parts! Nothing like a Bombardier-made VW.

Good plan Greg! I will be at the Haida Way restaurant at approx 0900
for breakfast if anyone wants to join me. I think I may be able to
coax my friend with his lightweight into joining us as well. I will
send a reminder to all involved a few days before to let all know and
confirm details. So far we have 6 trucks from the Isle with a
possibility of 2 from the mainland(Roverlanders)

Glen,
Visit www.mapleleafup.org and join the forums. These guys are hard core
CMPers. You have a question, some one there has an answer, including a
cross over parts list. Also join Western Command Mil Veh collectors club
www.westerncommand.com there are a lot of CMPers there too! Where are you
located, how did you find the HUP and what shape is it in? Pics?
Cheers
JD

Glenn, it just so happens that I know where ther are 3 of them that
are in pretty good order. 2 Troop carriers and a wrecker. Now that I
have your attention Glenn I'll tell you the whole story. I'm a
volunteer driver with the National War Museum. We have just as I have
told you and the three of them are in show room condition here in
Victoria. If you are interested I could arrange to show them to you if
you have a few hours to spare. Also a friend has a contact for
spares. As it turns out we are looking for a volunteer mechanic to do
some work on one of them. Would you be interested? There is about 8
hrs of work to be done on it. I'll assist you and buy you lunch. (Now
there's a deal)
Cheers
Derek

Hey guys, I have recently become the owner of a 1942 Chevrolet CMP C8
HUP. I was wondering if anyone out there knew of any other trucks that
I could get parts from. This one has had a lot of parts robbed off of
it and could end up being a parts truck itself. Your help would be
appreciated. Glenn

Let's meet at 10 AM at the Shell gas station on the highway at the north end
of the Chemainus Industrial Park. They have coffee and snacks there. Every
one should bring a picnic lunch. Victor says there is plenty of "no scratch"
driving for those who want it and some good short-cuts for those that want
something a bit more challenging.
See you then.
