RoverTym Bumper & Winch Install

Phase 1. Remove old plastic bumper and install new RoverTym bumper.

Old bumper removed, and washer bottle sprayed flat black (not dry yet, so still glossy)

The instructions said to have a helper, but I was on my own, so with lots of wood under and above the jack, and some jack stands, on it went.

Bolted up it looks like it belongs. Took about two hours to install. Of note, it is important to have BOTH handles on the 1/2 inch drill when you drill out the vertical holes as it has the tendency to spin around and hit one in the chin. don't ask me how I know that... :o

Phase 2: Install Winch

Tonight's project was to do the basic install. It'll be another day or two before I get it all wired. This went very easy, all the bolts lined up and it was installed in about a half hour.

Phase 3: Cut the grill.

I don't have alot of problem with taking the cutter to bodywork on any of my vehicles, so without too much of a gulp I used an angle grider with a cutoff blade to do the first major cut...

This was followed by about twenty smaller, more precise cuts, and a fair bit of rasping. While not perfect, I think it came out OK.

I am also aware of two of these grilles, in the same colour sitting at autwreckers, so if I really screwed it up, it wasn't the end of the world.

Phase 4: Dual battery box and shutout solenoid... and winch wiring. — another week or two. Perhaps by Easter weekend.

It's Pamela's newly acquired 88 Range Rover, thanks to Rob in Ladysmith. We just really needed to get rid of the old Ford Contour, and though, why not another Rover. Pamela does very low miles so the fuel costs are a reasonable exchange for the extra safety and excellent visibility of the Rangie. It needs a few tweaks, like the A-frame ball joint in the rear, and likely head gaskets, but it runs OK for her as a round-town truck.

I was hoping to ask Stuart where he got the clip-on setup for his fairlead on his white rangie. Is it homemade, Stuart?

Don't want to drill unneccesary holes in the new bumper... cutting up bodywork is one thing... but drilling into a freshly powdercoated new bumper, well that would be a shame. :wink:

Mag Light Mount clips fit perfectly but to be safe also attach a saftey tether in case it gets bumped off.

Hi Dave,
Paul Cooper had a fancy clip-on license plate set up (& safety wire).

Not sure where he got his from but it worked well.....

Hi Dave Bumper looks great. Yes I'm using the maglite clips 4 the front plate, no lanyard yet…probably wait till I run over the plate at least once :D . Course only works with roller fairlead :shock: . Still in Cali working on the LR2 launch.
