Stick a probe into the small hole and push the spring forward (or back, depends on your prespective). YES, there is a spring in there. It is a flat spring that jams on an angle onto the shaft to lock the knob on. When it is pushed the right way, the knob pulls straight off. When you see it off it will make perfect scense and it is as easy any anything.
