Holyoak Snow Run, January 27th

#1 Post by cbalme » Tue Jan 15, 2019 3:47 pm

Hi all, been a while since our last outing with the Land Rovers. I figured we should get out there and play in the snow before it all melts.

The plan is to meet at the Haida Way restaurant for 8:30 on the 27th to eat a hearty breakfast, then hit the trails towards Mt Brenton and Holyoak Lake.

Bring a lunch, snow boots, a shovel, and some chains if you have them.

Let us know if you're coming so we can save you a seat at the table.

Gas trucks at the back.

Hi Colin

Marg and I are in. I need a ride as per usual (2 Land rovers 1 in hibernation 1 in pieces.)

I think you mean Diesels at the back.

Hi Colin,

Is this a scratch-free run? My new LR3 doesn’t like scratches.

Hi Colin

I'll try to be there with my 109. It's a diesel but isn't very smokey so hopefully the gasser guys won't complain too much!

Hi Ron

It should be scratch and damage free as it will mostly be mainline logging roads, how far we will get in the snow is anybody's guess.
Come early breakfast is at 8:30 (which hopefully will also be non damaging). I will make a reservation for 14 folks so let us know if your coming, its always good food. ( If you arrive late you get to buy breakfast for the whole group.)
The meeting place The Haida- way restaurant is on the south west corner of the Trans Canada highway and Henry road by the big antique barn and the turn off to Chemanus.

See you guys there. Remember we need a minimum of 4 Rovers to make this happen so if you are coming along speak up.

I will be a last minute decision as some of us are struggling with a terrible cold. Ron

Hi Ron

So since when did a rough and tough Land rover driver let a little thing like a common cold stop him?

Just think of the poor guys driving in series trucks, no insulation on the bare metal doors, drafts coming in from all angles and Land Rovers laughable attempt at a heater which the English drivers call a shin burner, for those of you who do not know what a shin burner is its a round heater mounted near the floor that kind of stirs the air around a little with out warming it, those guys will really be feeling the........... cccold.

See you there. (Hopefully) Victor

Sounds like fun, I am in. The Disco may not have the historic cachet of others but there is plenty of heat for anyone looking for a comfortable outing.

As for who leads, lets see who is the fastest. Paul

Not sure we can make it.
I fly in late Saturday night.
It'll be a short notice decision on Sunday am if I can get out of bed!

Thank you Colin for organizing the day! It was a nice day at Holyoak, 4 rovers in total, 2 Defender 110's, a Disco 1 and a 109 5 door. Found some snow and in classic "Snowflake Chase" fashion the front 2 trucks got stuck and shoveled while the rest of us made snowmen and enjoyed the sunshine... lots of cloud but we were able to get above it. The SuperWinch came in handy (thanks, Oliver!!!) and the clouds cleared for us as we enjoyed lunch and with a top-of-the-world vista. Here's a couple of pics to prove we did it:

Had a great day out! I think that fresh mountain air and diesel fumes cured my cold.

Here's a few pics I took as well

Had an incident when a snowman didn't get out of the way in time. The disco was stuck in the ruts and couldn't dodge him.

There is another thing I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post pictures of but it involves a winch and a ditch.
