LR3 Footwell wet - leaks

#1 Post by philchan1974 » Tue Nov 17, 2020 7:57 pm

Hi - thought I'd try the forum here to see if anyone has any ideas about an LR3 water leak into the footwell. This past weeks deluge didn't help matters.

Please note - I've tried everything that is recommended. I'm stumped.

1) I've replaced the tubes for the sunroof and made sure it drains freely.
2) I've checked the cowl/intake for wetness - none.
3) I have done the a pillar repair (2x)
4) I have taped the cowl. I have also taped the top of the windshield.

It seems these symptoms present themselves:

1) after a prolonged rain it leaks. It's not something I can reproduce with a garden hose. It's like its draining somewhere, holding itself, then letting it go in a flood.
2) when starting it up (after #1) there is a trickle of water that can be heard behind the dash
3) It seems to be leaking from behind the foam on the bulkhead (see video).

I thought I solved in back in September, but hard rains here not the west coast in the last week have not been kind. I DID have the windshield replaced earlier this year, but find it hard to think it's this (plus I have covered most areas up with tape to rule this out.

I am at wits end because it's been a good year. Every time I think I've got it solved it leaks again.

Here's a video of where it's leaking too:

Hi @philchan1974 I feel your pain I have been struggling with my Disco and leak in a passenger side, I think I finally have it.

I do not where all the LR3 might leak but I would suggest the windshield, not just the top mine leaked at the bottom and only sometimes.

Or possibly your roof rack seal if you have one.

Did you replace the rubber elbow for the sunroof drains ?

Here it is - Am sure this is the culprit. Any LR3 / Gearheads want to give me an idea where it's coming from and how to fix? It is hard to see, but that is water up to the module.

Cant really tell by the pic, but if it is leaking in the passenger side, chances are it’s coming from the air intake under the windshield cowling. The vent protrudes on one side allowing water ingress. Easiest way to see is to pull the cabin filter and see if it’s wet.
If it is...then pop off the wipers (I used tape to Mark the wiper position) and windshield cowl. You can do this without A pillar trim by just slightly bending the cowl end out from underneath.
Then you’ll need to fabricate a “shield” covering the protruding vent area, but leaving the covered area open for air flow.

I used some heavy zinc roll, with some aluminum tape (really sticky) to affix it....bingo...no more leaks.
