Hi All,
I have two issues with the driveline in my '96 D1.
It has long had a minor whine in the automatic transmission. Lately though it has become quite a bit louder. It only whines under acceleration. I've changed both the ATF in the tranny and the 80/140 in the transfer case with no change. Any suggestions as to what it might be?
Recently, at highway speeds (above 80kph), when changing from accel or cruise to decel, there is a rumble in the driveline while it isn't under load. It goes away as soon as I brake or accel. I don't think its related to the whine, but it might be.... Anyhow, my rear driveshaft is fairly new and both u-joints check out fine (I changed it from the rear rubber coupling to a rear u-joint 2 yrs ago). The front driveshaft u-joints also check out fine. I did the check by taking a large screwdriver and trying to pry each joint. No play at all. Perhaps I could remove one driveshaft, put the tranny in hi lock and drive it to see if the rumble goes away, and if not, repeat for the other one. But if it's neither driveshaft, is it possible it's a CV joint? Any way to check the CV joint short of removing it? I don't think it's a wheel bearing or the noise would be constant, no? What else might cause this noise?
Any and all suggestions are appreciated.

I would take a good look at the divine itself, also the pinion bearings in the differential(s).
Sound to me like the diffs have been neglected and you probably have pitted differential gears.
