Those mysterious frost plugs

#1 Post by JoJo the Giraffe » Sun Feb 27, 2022 8:17 am

Now that the sunroofs are closed, I was planning to do a coolant drain and refill. Well the Green Beastie decided to have a good piss overnight in the driveway. Thinking that it was a hose…NOT. Looks like a frost plug on the passenger side. I will get the ramps out and see what is going on, and where. Pending access, I may try those expandable rubber frost plugs where you just shove it in and tighten, if a hammer swing cannot be done. Where can you get these? Thanks.

Why not get the proper metal hammer in frost plugs?

It’s more about have room to swing a hammer than anything else to pop the plug in. If its at the back, I will have to remove the heat shield that protects the starter. If its on the backend, that is right above the tranny.

Sorry I didn’t read the part in your initial post about no room to swing a hammer. I should think Napa or Lordco would have them.

After checking the system with a UV light and dye and got a system pressure test, there is a small leak in the gasket…right behind the starter. You would not be able to see this unless the heat shield was removed.

Now short of being crucified by true believers, I did add some Bar’s stop leak and so far after a few days and some good highway and off-road trips…no leaks. I know it may hold for a week, month or year but time will tell.
