Chevy (250) 4.1L inline six in a Series swapping to a Chevy 292....

#1 Post by Dijan1993 » Mon Mar 06, 2023 6:48 am

Well currently I have an inline (250hp) 4.1L L6 in my series station wagon and was curious if anyone has put an Chevy 292 in a series before. if so, is gear box/ Transmission adapter? Any information is good and greatly appreciated.
Why? Simply because the specific year of the inline six I have (79-82) has been a gong show to get parts because of the integral exhaust head. Plus I may have found a Chevy 292.

Greg_M from Courtenay had adapters etc for an inline 6 (250 cu in) for sale....mind you that was in Jan 2022. He may have some experience in the 292 vs 250.
Plus If I remember there was some discussion re the 292 fit in that thread.

My memory must be rusty as I thought the bell housings bolt pattern was the same for the two sixes. I also thought the divorced manifold head could be swapped on to 250 blocks that originally had the siamesed head. So I guess I'm not much help. Sorry.

Thanks Greg and Stuart.
I am waiting to hear back from the guys with the inline 292. as for ahead swap... that may work.... Anyone know where I can get a new/ used inline 6 non-integral head? The carb. on this integral head inline 6 looks like something off of star trek i.e. a Borg machine lol! feel free to anyone who may have any other info as well to chime in.

Again, no real help but I went with a clifford aluminum intake and holley 390 cfm 4 bbl and that combo pulled...
I can't find evidence (photos) but I'm all but certain I swapped heads from integral to divorced while building my 250. Loved that motor.

Somewhat of a diversion from Land Rover discussions....but you may find something for the inline 250 on a few group sites on FaceBook
1. "Canadian Classic Ford & Merc Trucks"......even though this site is Ford related someone may know of cylinder head for a Chev.
2. "Classic Cars, Trucks, and Bikes BC/AB/SK"

The 230, 250 and 292 all use the same bellhousing bolt pattern, so there’s no change there.

The 292 is taller, and may have clearance issues to contend with that the shorter block of the 250 doesn’t have. The 292 also has a different right hand motor mount location than trees 250.

Not direct experience, but from what I have read, the 292 is generally regarded to be too much for the Rover drivetrain, eating gearboxes in short order and axles not being far behind.

Best bet is likely to keep looking for a non integral 250 head/intake and swap it, or a complete 250 motor, if you want to keep your life simple.

Thank you Timberpig. That is where I was heading. The integral head had two castellated posts on the top of the valve cover for the P.A.I.R, a very useless early form of emission control... This added another 3-3.5" of height. The mounting might be the killer to the 292 install project.

There is a complete Chev 250 + trans (complete) for sale in Sidney on FB marketplace.
Search Engine/Transmission 250 Chev.....a bit pricey.

Given you’re in Calgary, there’s a mostly complete but torn down 250, with separate head listed on Kijiji for $250. If the head is good, you could swap it, park the rest on a shelf and come out pretty decent.
Looks like it doesn’t have the intake, so you would need to find one and a carb, but this would take you in the right direction.
