Anyone have an LR3 with locking rear diff?
Looking at purchasing an LR3 with locking rear diff but I am not sure the one I looked at is working correctly. Need to understand how they normally work. Will provide more info if anyone responds. Thanks

I was looking at a 2007 today with the intent to purchase but I am not sure the rear diff is working correctly.philchan1974 wrote:I had one. Let me know if I can help.
In high range the car drives fine. In low range I was driving around in a paved parking lot and when making 90 degree turns it seemed the rear diff was binding. If it was locked I could sort of understand this happening on pavement but the 4x4 info screen never showed it locked. I also thought it would only lock when you had wheel spin.
Does this behavior suggest a problem? Does the rear diff always lock up when in low range? Is the 4x4 display always supposed to show this? Do you ever hear sound from rear diff and feel it
Seller will hold the car till Friday so I need to decide whether or not to buy it. Car has new lower front control arms, repaired e- brake system, cooler box, heated windscreen and two sets of wheels.
Appreciate any thoughts.

I know my series truck does not like making turns in 4wd on pavement, I would say that is normal for it to dislike turning 90 degrees. I can't shed any light on why the rear diff did not lock though. My parent's LR3 does have the symbol for a rear diff lock but it does not have one equipped.

The chirping on pavement is simply the center diff being locked, not the rear axle diff.
The rear diff lock is variable and only locks in very specific circumstances.

I have the locking rear diff on my LR3. You won’t get the rear diff to show it’s locked unless you’re seriously off roading. The truck decides when to use it and my truck only uses it if I’m in rock crawl mode and scrambling on some pretty rough terrain. I don’t think a parking lot will be an accurate method to see if it’s working properly or not.

Re: Anyone have an LR3 with locking rear diff?
Sorry for the late reply on this.
My particular lr3 with the locking diff was a pain in the ass. it was failing and apparently when they do getting them re/re is a huge cost. None of the local shops understand them or will touch them in my experience.
Like Matt says, unless you’re seriously off roading the truck is perfectly capable without it.

Re: Anyone have an LR3 with locking rear diff?
Confirm that the LR3 in question has locking rear differential with VIN search. Even though the screen shows a locking rear diff, doesn’t mean it has it. I terms of wanting one and ease, I’m thinking the ARB locking diff is the way to go. BTW you cannot add a LR3 locking diff to a non-factory installed LR3 as they are mated to the ECU.
Gord. Are parting ways with the P38?

Hi Gord,
Glad to hear you are now an LR3 owner - mine is also a 2008 without a locking rear diff and has served me well.

Amadreas.
Yes you can. I have done it.
Install the locking diff and its different length drive shafts, install the wiring & rear diff ECM. Then edit the CCF files. Easy.
