It's all got to come off to do the swivel ball seals, hub and swivel ball removed from the axle casing. You can go here to download .PDF copies of some of the factory manuals;

Yes, you can pull the entire assembly off as one piece. It is heavy, but it is the quickest way to just replace the swivel seal.
It does not hurt though to go the factory method as you can check the bearings and swivel preload at the same time. The "special" hub tools only cost around $15 and you should be able to get one locally somewhere. The hub nut is the same size as old Jeeps.
