Check the discussion forums at www.island4x4.com and www.can4x4.com/irc/ about the new gates.
It sounds like the Weeks Lake area is no longer accessible, and the last time I was there, the parking area by the lake was a garbage heap. Wouldn't want to camp there. BUT there were some great trails in the area.
Also, most of the woods are currently shut due to high fire hazard.
Back Roads Camping Jordan River area?

A circle trip: Victoria, Port Renfrew, Bamfield, Port Alberni, Nanaimo is a nice route. Not much in the way of play areas unless you go exploring on a side road and I can't recommend any in that area because I don't know it well. The Island 4x4 site group can better advise you there. (I see you have a posting there as well. Good.)
