Crapped out Salisbury?

#1 Post by tony » Sat Nov 06, 2010 4:13 pm

So this year on my way home from Moab the engine ran fine but it seems the last of the rover parts are giving out. I pulled the Salisbury diff. cover off to find out what went wrong and found nothing that I could see, yet in Spokane it felt, and I do mean felt like mismatched gears and the noise that it made on the highway in overrun was nothing as tame as a Series trucks. After disconnecting the prop and removing the half shafts and running home in FWD all the noises disappeared. So how can you tell if the Salisbury diff. is shot? and if its not that, then why didn't the T-case continue to make any noise after disconnecting the diff.? unless the load changes without the rear prop being driven by the T-case.

It could easily be bearings and you might not see anything till you took it right apart. Sound can and will travel up the drive shaft and can make it sound like the T'case is noisy.

Center diff in the t. case? Locking it takes it out of the picture.

As above, you can't see the inside of a Sals without taking it apart, can you?

Hi Tony,

You removed the rear drive shaft... In my series truck I had noise very similar to what you describe and discovered after looking at the major components that the problem was actually the slip-yolk on the rear driveshaft. Check very carefully for any play in the driveshaft before digging deeper.

HI Tony,

I also suspected my rear dif had gone, only to discover that I had a seized U-Joint.

Good luck and keep us posted as to what you find.

BTW...technically it's not a land Rover part rather a renamed Dana...

It cant be the prop shaft as it is a brand new GBR one which got re-balanced in Missoula Montana by Inland Truck Parts and service who I can not say enough good about, very Rover friendly. $147.50 for 3hrs of pissing around and drive shaft balancing, and they took me in with no waiting. 1-406-728-7413 ask for Don.
So what I hear (or want to hear) you guys saying is that it's not the T-case yes? and it could be the Salisbury even though it seems to be tight with no play in the bearings.
Looks like I'm building a case spreader next week in that case.

Leave the driveshaft out and put the half shafts back in and take it for a drive. The Salsbury/Dana diffs are renown for their superior strength so unless you ran it dry or full of water, its just not likely to be the problem.

Seem to be the spider gears that are broken in some way or other, put a half shaft in and tried turning it by hand, the gears are not meshing and it doesn't rotate easily. Am I going to have to put a locker in to cure this  ?

Are the spiders OK? Maybe you lost a thrust washer? Take the center apart and see what you have to deal with. It would be pretty weird to have damaged the 4 pin Dana 60 center!!! I would guess a washer came out.

Kirk must have a stock center in the garage, no??

You know you want to put in an ARB....

The thrust washers are still there but quite pitted. Kirk does have a center but for a 4.10 set with the crown and pinion, so that's whats going in, and yes i know i have to do the front as well.

I think it will be a Detroit though.

Just a thought...Check the housing is not bent…puts a load on the diff center if it is and damages washers and spiders…

Found a spare filler plug between the pinion bearings, maybe that was why.
