Flat towing in Alberta and BC?

In the past I've done lots of flat towing of land rovers but it seems that I need to get up to speed on the current rules.

I'm thinking of flat towing a RRC swb and/or a defender 90 in AB and BC behind my K2500 6.5TD Suburban (rated to tow 10,000lbs). I would have done this is the past but now I'm not sure if I would have to have some sort of brakes on the towed vehicle. Some thing like the "Readybrake" system:

The other option is a car dolly but they are usually not rated for more than 3500lbs and they might also have to be braked.

What say you all?

The most recent info I have is from a towing seminar about 7 years ago, so things may have changed. However at that time, for towing vehicles or trailers, the weight of the towed vehicle had to be 50% or less of the weight of the towing vehicle, otherwise a brake setup was required on the towed vehicle.

I can just sort of squeak by towing my 88" with my Discovery II, especially if I load all my gear in the D2. :roll:

The 50% rule is what used to go by. Not sure that is still the case.

Alberta....Brakes required on anythng over 2000 lbs if the trailer is more than 50% the weight of the tow vehicle. http://www.transportation.alberta.ca/Co ... wguide.pdf
