I was recently off roading a bit and got stuck in a wash out. The right rear tire was in the air while all others were firmly on the ground. I was in low with the ceter differential lock in but the back wheel spun. I was under the impression that if all is well the front wheels should have pulled me out. The differential lock light was on but it has always flickered when the lock is engaged. Is this normal or should it burn steadily?
How do I test to see if the differential lock is functioning? Is there a likely source of trouble if it fails to work or is this a job for the transmission shop?

If you turn a circle at full lock, the tires should bind and skid.
Gearbox in neutral, jack up one wheel. You should not be able to spin it.
The light should not flicker.

As to fixes, make sure the linkage is turning the engagement stud fully.
They are pretty simple to work on.
