Sorry Haters......

#1 Post by Russ » Wed Feb 20, 2013 9:29 pm

Couple people in the Jeep club went out for a run and guess what/who tagged along?

Not that V-Rock is anything too crazy, but with 20" rims and street tires I'm pretty sure even a Defender would have some issues :).... Enjoy!!

It doesn't look like he had the suspension lifted. A sharp right might have helped too.

So, where is "V-rock"?

The wrong tool for the job I suppose. Russ- what did that little mis-adventure end up costing?

hey thats me in the vid. i dont really understand the title of the thread though.

i almost made it over but i just needed a little bit more clearance, it was in regular offroad mode. anyways i found a way to make the vehicle go into extended offroad mode so i want to try v rock again. perhaps i could also try a different line.

anyways the damage looks much worse than it actually is. i just had to get a few new plastic clips from the dealer and the side skirts popped back on.

im working on that. theres only one company that i know of that makes them and they charge $1880 for the kit, but im going to see if i can get a custom set made locally.

The "V" rock is on the way up to Sunrise Lake, half way up the west side of Harrison Lake.

The "Haters" title is just poking a little fun cause it seems the newer Range Rovers aren't "real" Landy's in some people's opinion.

Personally I think the new Range Rover is fantastic. Great creature comforts, every bell and whistle that you could ever want, very, very good off road...air conditioning...ahhhhh...air conditioning (my 110 gets very very hot in the summer)...the only problem as I see it is the price...ouch

There is no doubt that if I won the lottery, and money was no object I would be driving one right now! It would be fun to kit it out as much as possible and thrash it about.

Is it a Land Rover...Hell Yes!!! and as a Defender owner I am delighted to be associated with such a fine product.

...I would still keep the Defender though

Re OP ouch! I'm glad it's not as bad as it looks, because it looks pretty nasty.

Re 'fancy' newish Range Rovers. I still can't get over the fact that, in Canada, most Defenders are actually more expensive than than most Range Rovers.

Not sure what the wheels and tires have to do with it, they seemed to do fine. The spotter on the other hand... was he conscious? He should have stopped you and had you take a different line. With the right line, that Range Rover would have walked right over the V rock.

ya it really wasnt bad at all since those things just pop right off. everything is put back together now.
ill definitely give V rock another try.

apparently i can throw a jack stand under the vehicle, lower it all the way down, and then it will cause it to go into extended off road height (+1.5"), from there i can hold down the raise button for 3 seconds and then ill get another 1.5". thats another 3" over the current offroad mode. that should do the trick until i get a diagnostic tool that will let me raise it via my obd2 port.

one day id love to buy a defender (or a G wagon). i saw some at the land rover dealership when i was out in asia and they were selling for about 67k for a brand new one.

Confirmed for ya with the techs. You'll only get a total of 1.5" in extended, but remember you will have absolutely no down travel at that point. Should still work fine.

Russ, by reading your link, it sounds like you get more than the 1.5". If you're in "extended" and want more that is. See paragraph 2.

Say what you'd like, but its never a true Landy if it can't tackle the Camel Trophy. And I have serious doubts about them making it 5 miles before abandoning ship! :D

Series 1 80", 86" and 88" plus Series II and Series IIa never competed in the Camel Trophy...are they not Land Rovers as well? Remember that during the CT years, there was a fleet of mechanics riding along...

I'm sure that a series could tackle it. Taking mechanics along is the Land Rover way  Between the low slung bumper, and the massive wheelbase, the new ones wouldn't get too far.

not too familar with the various Camel Trophy expeditions .... however you should read the 100 days of the Darien by Russell Braddon ... a 1972 British Trans-Americas expedition . Vehicles selected were 2 Range Rovers and a Land Rover Series truck which was part of the ' Pathfinder ' group . The Series Land Rover held its own in unbelievable conditions .

Not to sure how available this book is today though ... I acquired mine on ebay about 2 years ago . It was a bit pricey . A recommended read in my opinion .

If you like modern RRs check out the last Top Gear. They ran the new model over a lot of off road action. Apparently the new model is quite a bit lighter and more expensive.

From my experience, weight and the difficulties in fitting decent tires was their biggest limitation. That and the fear of hurting such an expensive vehicle.
