Dirty Picture?

#1 Post by Crs » Tue May 14, 2013 6:17 pm

OK, remember, newbie trying to keep up with some simple servicing. :D

After the Squamish run last week, I just checked the oil (added about 500mL, first time in a long time) and checked the coolant (level still good).

However, I also tried to check the air filter. I've never done that before. The filter showed a bit of black stuff, but not much IMHO. Here's a photo of the air filter (97 Disco 4.0 V8 auto). Does it need changing? Thanks in advance.

Hi Craig,

I would say best to change it if you don't know how long it's been installed.
Then once you have a new one installed you will know how long it's been in and change at the recommended intervals. With the amount of over roading we do and the dusty forest service roads best to change them quite often. (Even more often than the manual recommends).

Cheers,
Andy

May sound silly but you can run a vaccuum cleaner over it (don't literally run it over with the vaccuum, use the attachment) and that will remove a lot of the dirt and dust.

Or because filters are cheap anyway, you can just replace it to be safe and you'll know when to start the service intervals.
