Backfiring

#1 Post by derek n » Sun Jun 05, 2005 10:19 pm

:? Just did the points, condensor, rotor and checked the timing. All seemed well. Took the airportable for a long spin and was quite pleased with the performance as the old set of points were in a bad way. One small problem. I was doing about 50 mph and when I started slowing down(read foot off accelerator) I got a resounding backfire. This is the only time it did it. It does not pink going up a steep hill bogged down. The motor accelerates well and so on. Any ideas what this might be?

Out there on the island it could have just been a local testing out his new gun.

Backfirign is usually caused by unburnt fuel in hot exhaust pipes, sometimes combined with an exhaust leak drawing in air and creating a flash point. Is your exhaust leaking? Are you running a bit rich?

Dave

Thanks for the tip. Got a chance to inspect the exhaust tonight, low and behold a nice quarter in. hole hidden between the muffler and flange, a pipe approx 1 inch long. Did the quick fix tonight. will come up with something more permanent later. What a difference it has made in the noise level inside the vehicle. This hole has been there since I bought the vehicle 3 years ago. I just thought it was supposed to sound that way. So no more back fire, alot quieter and some answers on other previous woes.

Rick
I will call you Wed afternoon as I am off at 1330 hrs.
