2014 drive.

#1 Post by Greg S » Fri Dec 26, 2014 9:50 am

I'm ready for a drive this week. When and where? Who else wants to come along?

Went for a couple hours today following logging roads. Wondering about a Friday or Saturday drive next week. 2nd or 3rd?

Drive - Saturday Jan 3rd, 2015 - here's the plan!

#7 Post by Rob » Mon Dec 29, 2014 10:00 am

Hello everyone

In consultation with Victor I'm posting the proposed plan for our next Rover Run. The trip is this coming Saturday, Jan 3rd, 2015. There will be time for breakfast at the Haida Way Restaurant (9320 Trans-Canada Highway, Chemainus, BC V0R 1K4) at 0845 for those interested. We will depart the parking lot at 0930. The route plan is to go to the Snowmobile Cabin near Rinehart Lake or other routes depending on snow conditions (there is a little white stuff up there right now). Most likely to be a no-scratch or minor scratch run on roadways, some off-camber and tank traps but most rovers should be able to negotiate the trip without difficulty. It is a family-friendly trip, kids and dogs are welcome. Plan for lunch at the cabin, bring the usual, radios, maps, gps, recovery and repair tools as you see fit. We will bring along some wieners and buns in-case there is a fire or the stove is lit at the cabin. As usual everyone is welcome to bring some munchies to share if they see fit but not a requirement. J**ps and other non-rovers welcome but have to run behind the diesels!!!

Hope to see you all there!

Rob

I'll have an open passenger seat if you want to ditch comfort for old school.

Did a little exploring out there today with the Range Rover. Coming in from the north on the Hall Main Road, encountered about 2 inches of snow and some icy patches on both the Holland and Hall mains. It started getting deeper near kilometer 8 climbing up Mount Hall. Stopped at about the 3000 foot elevation level breaking trail, was still making progress (TC was doing its magic) but didn't want to have to shovel so retreated back towards Holyoak.... main road had two huge tank traps that would have needed bridging. I crawled all along the north side of the hills overlooking Silver Lake but couldn't find a passable connection to Holyoak Lake (hit lots of dead-ends... pretty scenery though). Here's a few pics from today https://www.flickr.com/photos/green_rov ... 021097701/ Looking forward to seeing everyone out on the 2nd!

Hello

I will be there for breakfast at 8:30- 8:45. We do have a reservation for 12 hungry rover drivers, adding more to the table should not be a problem come Saturday morning.

See you there.

The weather network is showing a "winter storm" rolling in Saturday evening. Should make for some fun mountain exploring!

We DID see snow but a pretty pathetic showing of it considering the "promised" storm. For those who couldn't make it- There was ice on the roads pretty much everywhere that there wasn't a bit of old snow, but only a hint of old snow. If we added up all the new snow we saw fall today I doubt it would cover my windshield.

Regardless- It was a really good drive, I enjoyed seeing and driving in the snow we DID have. Sherk Lake was someplace I'd never been to before but have heard a lot about. Good fishing I hear! I forgot to bring my new fishing pole and gear that I just got last week. I had just about everything else in the back of the 90, including a kitchen sink, or something that would have made do for one anyway.

Rheinhart lake and the cabin are both good destinations. We are probably the last road licensed vehicles to get to the cabin this year. I expect that storm I was hoping to see will block all those high roads until springtime.

Thanks crew!
