putting TD5 into D2?
Persons of Distinction,
As I'm rambling this morning, I have another question. Has anyone put a TD5 into a D2? These are the diesels used in the D2s in markets other than NA, so I assume it's easier than engineering a custom install.
Any ideas on this would be appreciated. The D2 we just bought has 92K kms, and I do not want to throw another set of head gaskets at a gas-guzzler; I want to put in the factory diesel option.
Thanks,

Yea that would be an interesting conversion, I have done a fair amount of pretty nasty trail driving in Quebec in a 110 TD5.....it was pretty nice and handled the hiway speeds easily.
I have to wonder about the cost of all the bits and the price of diesel engine & install then more expensive diesel fuel , maybe just drop a Chevy 350 into it run regular gas, parts, service etc etc?
Its something that I may consider doing...the SBC that is.

Point is I want a diesel, and a the correct, factory installed diesel for ease of conversion. I run a percentage of biodiesel in my vw all the time, and I want to in the LR too. I know putting a TD5 into the D2 is going to cost at least double what doing head gaskets will, but I want the fuel economy the diesel will give (about 10mpg more if I'm correct), which will offset the cost of the installtion in time, and I can then run biodiesel too.
Why buy a vehicle with a diesel I don't want when I can convert the D2 which I do like?

have fun david, thats all I can say.. Go to pirate4x4 and check out the landrover forum there is a guy talking about the same thing on there.
Turns out its not as easy as you may think. D2 have way more electrical issues then a D1.
But your right diesel is the way to go , reason why Iam putting the OM617 into my D1.

I remember last year there was a D2 with a 300tdi in it. This may be an easier conversion than the TD5. The other thing is the TD5 is not a mechanical injector and may not take the biodiesel as well as the 300. I heard that the tranny ecu is connected to the engine ecu in D2's so the electrice are a little hassle. I did the 300 swap into my D1 a few years ago. You may wanty to go to a D1 for the conversion. They are better offroad with less overhang in the back.

The LR3s are available in other parts of the world with a V6 diesel. I have seen one in an LR3 ambulance conversion in Antigua and it was a very nice unit according to the owners who are quite pleased with its performance. Probably cost a small fortune to get one out here and retro-fit it but it fits into the LR3 nicely so going into a D2 shouldn't be too difficult... :?
As far as the TD5 goes, I roamed around Antigua in a heavily laden 110 with a TD5 and it was a nice ride with ample power and smooth acceleration though I wonder if dimensionally it would be a little too big for the D2 motor compartment? Were TD5 used in the D2 rigs elsewhere?
I've thought about repowering my D2 but for the $ spent on getting and installing the diesel it would buy a LOT of gas for my 4.0... I have also thought about going with a modern GM aluminum block V8 as there are lots of options and upgrades for the LS series.... I know, some might think this is blasphemy  suggesting gas and GMC in a rover but then again gas “GM” inspired engines have been powering rovers since the 70s…

TD5
Hey Rob,
DON'T DO IT...MOVE ON QUICKLY! One of our local guys shipped a TD5 from Germany and realized it just didn't make any sense. I looked at it for a Defender and realized it wouldn't work. What I found out was that the TD5 is so electronic and needs sensors and information from everything that it just is too much for a conversion. The only person I know that has successfully installed a TD5 is Ryan U in West Van but he did it with a Defender TD5 parts vehicle and he carries an extra programmed ECU just in case. Oh yeah and Ryan is a brilliant engineer that built his first land rover at age 15.
You said 300TDi, go with that if you want a diesel.
Regards,
